Where to go for piping hot idlis and egg roast at Changanassery Have you ever tired idli - egg roast combo? Photo: Onmanorama

Idlis rule supreme in the Malayali heart when it comes to breakfast ideas. At the Idlikada near Revenue Tower in Changanassery, you find the yummiest lot day after day - piping hot, fluffy and soft. So much so that the idli-maker earned himself the moniker ‘Idli Pillechan’. The name and fame has lived on for 87 years now. And idlis continue to be as fluffy and yummy under the stewardship of Idli Pillechan’s son Omanakkuttan and wife Sasikala.

The couple says that the original recipe to the delightfully fluffy idlis has remained unchanged over the years. So has Ildi Pillechan’s amusing improvisation on the side dishes. While the standard issue anywhere is idli with chutney and/or sambar, Idlikada serves you egg roast made with duck eggs, coconut chutney, kadala curry and uzhunnu vada. Omanakkuttan, a stickler for tradition, follows his father’s recipe to slow cook the egg roast with lots of onion, generous sprinklings of black pepper and, strictly, duck eggs. The regulars at Idlikada vouch for the mouthwatering idli-egg roast combo.

Tourists from abroad and other parts of the country are regular visitors at the Idlikada. Omanakkuttan says that the shop has never had a dull spell as far as he can remember thanks to his father’s culinary gift, although idli-lovers certify that he has inherited it in plenty. The shop continues to serve its signature dish at affordable rates which make it a favorite among local eat outs.
