Thrissur: Tourism destinations in Kerala are set to become differently-abled friendly. The Kerala Tourism Department’s new initiative Barrier-Free Kerala Tourism will ensure that differently-abled people can easily reach and enjoy popular tourism spots in Kerala.
In Thiruvananthapuram, construction of necessary passageways, ramps and washrooms are under way at popular destinations like Akkulam, Ponmudi and Veli.
Construction of these facilities are in the final stages at Ashramam Adventure Park and Thenmala in Kollam, and Kavanattinkara and Kumarakom in Kottayam.
In Fort Kochi, a ramp and passageway have been set up. At Alappuzha's Punnamada Kayal Fishing Point Terminal, Vattakkayal and Kayamkulam, these facilities have already been built. Differently-abled friendly washrooms have been set up at Karlad Lake, Kanthanpara and Pookode Lake in Wayanad.
In Thrissur too popular destinations like Vilangan Kunnu, Vazhani Peechi, and Poomala dams will soon have these facilities.
In Palakkad, construction of ramps and washrooms is complete at Kanjirapuzha Dam, Vatika Garden, Thiruvegappura Folklore Park. In Kasaragod district, Bekal Park already has such facilities.
As part of the initiative, tourism destinations will have wheelchair ramps with handrails, adequate signage in Braille, differently-abled friendly washrooms, restrooms, audio guides and special parking areas.
Besides this, wheelchairs, walking sticks, stretchers and small electric vehicles will also be available. There will be boards, signages and menu cards in Braille, tactile and Braille maps for the visually-impaired, and guides trained to assist the hearing-impaired.
