Ten magnificent bedrooms lie afloat on the water. The outside view from the windows is breathtaking. Nearly half the room is underwater. This could be chest level water if the observer were outside the room. Such a resort is a rare phenomenon in Kerala. This unique water world can be found in the floating ‘Aquatic Resort’ in Kumbalangi Puthenkari on the Kochi coastal area.
The resort which attracts people with its structural novelty and elegance of design is gearing up for renovation. The plan is to build 40 rooms in addition to the floating ten rooms and canteen and stage for conducting events built at a cost of Rs 40 crores. 24 cottages are also planned. A hall with a seating capacity of 300 opens next month. 500 people can easily attend a reception held in the lawns of the resort premises. Aquatic is all set to enter the ranks of Kochi’s convention centers. Many professional organizations have already started coming to Aquatic for conferences.
The resort lies floating on 30 acres red earth embankment with an average depth of 10 – 15 feet. Arrangements are progressing to use the pool on the front side entirely for recreations like swimming.
You can go for a ride in water cycle or small boats. There is facility for fishing using rods and also for feeding fish. Resort authorities claim that such a floating swimming pool is the first of its kind in India. Since it is fully surrounded by water, entering the pool gives one the feeling of being in a larger water body.
Aquatic has facilities for waste disposal and water purification. Waste water is purified and used for watering the garden. The ceilings of all floating entities including rooms are covered with coir spreads. This will resist heat apart from being pleasing to the eye. The living room adjacent to the bedrooms is above water level. Above this is a balcony. Sunbathing there is a favorite pastime of overseas tourists. Yoga and rejuvenation therapy are coming up.
You do not have to live in the Aquatic to enjoy its beauty. The canteen welcomes guests for lunch and dinner. Kumbalangi style meals are available for lunch. Seafood is the dinner highlight. Those needing chicken, mutton and beef will have to inform in advance for these dishes to appear at the dining table. There are no meat dishes in the Aquatic menu. Fish, prawns and calamari are available in different flavors. It is just that you have to wait one hour for it. You can kill the boredom of waiting by trying a hand at fishing. Catching over a kilogram of fish entitles you to purchase it if you desire. Dinner is beneath the sky, above the water surface and in candle light. Lower the burning candle a little to see schools of fish flocking in.
