For an average Malayali, there is nothing more agreeable than a plate of steaming, hot dosa with a row of invitingly colorful chutneys by its side. More so, if you are really hungry. And we were a hungry bunch when we walked into the newly opened 'Kingdom of Dosa' at Kanjikuzhi in Kottayam.
A well-lit, well-decorated entry way welcomes you. Make sure that you do not walk in through the first door you see. Your destination, Kingdom of Dosa or K.O.D, as they call it, is down a flight of stairs. The small restaurant is tastefully done up and the live dosa counter at the center will pique a dosa fanatic's interest.
They do not have individual menu cards for each table. You have to gaze up at the blackboard and decide on something. And that is where the confusion begins. There are about 40 different dosas to pick up from an array of vegetarian, non-vegetarian and sweet dosas.
We could not decide on our order and while we were at it, a helpful staff member came up and suggested we try their ‘test tube dosa platter,’ which is a collection of 12 different dosas on the menu. And by the time we settled down, we had a small jar of welcome drink ready at our table.
As we gulped down the drink, the 'live dosa counter' was getting busier. The metal ladle clanging against the cast iron tawa gave the sight a fitting, high-energy beat. And before long, we were presented with 12 small dosas on a wooden platter. Four different chutneys and a mayonnaise dip made up the accompaniments. There were two dosas with vegetarian toppings, two with sweet toppings and the rest had non-vegetarian toppings.
What we ordered
We had also ordered Kebab Dosa, Paneer Dosa and Beef Uthappam. The dosas were thin and crispy and the fillings will really make your tummy happy. The 'Paneer Dosa', though yummy, had an overdose of masala, but the Kebab Dosa was just right for our palates. The Uthappam was not oily and the beef filling was just perfect. The chutneys need a special mention here. They were common for all the dishes we ordered, but we just fell in love with the peanut chutney. The mint chutney was good too.
If you are someone keen on having something sweet to finish off a meal, there are five dosas to pick up from to satisfy your sweet tooth – Death by Chocolate Dosa, Jamun Dosa, Sloppy Fruity Dosa, Unicorn Dosa and Red Velvet Dosa. Trust us, the sweet dosas will come as a surprise. But if you are someone who prefers dosas with sambar and chutney, your palate will take a while to adapt to this transmogrification. There are fresh juices and milkshakes too, if you still have a space in your tummy.
On the purse
All dosas come with toppings and the vegetarian dosas start at Rs 120 – the platters are a bit expensive starting at Rs 150. What works in Kingdom of Dosas' favor is the fact that no other place in Kottayam offers such a wide variety of dosas. And, oh, you do not get plain dosas here.
