The monsoon is a season of cravings – for hot beverages, mouth watering savoury dishes loaded with flavours, spicy snacks, and much more. A stroll through the streets of Kozhikode, enjoying the monsoon showers, is the perfect way to enjoy some of the most delicious food items. At the Pottamal junction beyond the over-bridge at Ariyidathupalam near Mavoor road, a sign board in distinct orange hue captures the attention of travellers.

'Street Rolls' is a small shack-like eatery which serves delicious rolls and juices. Rolls are one of the most popular street foods around the world, and it is a staple for the adventure seekers who like to hit the road. Friends having a delightful conversation over a delicious roll has now become the most common sight on the road-sides and quaint little streets.

The roll, popularly known as the Kati roll, originated in Kolkata and has taken over the streets of India. Special chicken roll and mint sulaimani is a delicious 'match' made in the kitchen of 'Street Rolls.' The tastefully done interiors of the eatery primarily don orange and black colours; simple benches are laid for the customers. Small yellow bulbs and green bushes in tiny pots add to the charm of the place. The special chicken roll, which is a bit spicy, is the most popular item on their menu. The kati (paratha bread) is not made with maida like the local porotta. The pudina chutney and mayonnaise add the perfect accompaniment for the kati roll.

Passion for rolls

The 'Street Rolls' is owned by Nawaf, Shamyas, Mufeed, and Fousad – childhood friends who share a common passion for tasty food. Two of them are B Tech graduates while the rest hold MBA degrees. All of them have studied outside Kerala and they were particularly attracted to the tasty Kati rolls during their many journeys together. It was only two months ago that the friends opened 'Street Rolls,' their maiden venture.

Though their eatery was closed for a fortnight following the Nipah outbreak, the 'Street Rolls' is now on a roll serving hot, spicy, and delicious kati rolls.
