Chathamma Island, a safe haven close to Kochi

In the vicinity of Kochi city are several scenic locations immersed in myths, legends, and history. Chathamma Island, which is a ward of Kumbalam panchayat, is one such spot.

During the days when this area was under monarchy, the island had offered a safe hideout for many people who had invited the wrath of the king. At the time of the Independence struggle also many freedom fighters took refuge in Chathamma. Difficult to access, the island was a paradise for people who were on the run from sometihng. Interestingly, Chathamma was in the news recently after it was revealed that a noted person had lived in a resort on the island to evade arrest.

A one-hour drive from Ernakulam can take travellers to Chathamma, which is no longer an isolated place as a bridge has been built connect the island to the mainland. The route to Chathamma from Ernakulam is via Vytilla. Take the Vytilla-Cherthala road and turn left at Madavana traffic signal. Along this route, Chathamma is 16 km away.

It is a narrow road that takes travellers to the island but there is beautiful rural scenery on both sides. Several species of birds can also be observed, offering a feast for birdwatchers. Meanwhile, the Cheppanam bridge is a favourite among anglers and the Chinese fishing nets nearby are part of the landscape.

Mangroves as well as prawn farms can be noticed all along the path, which ends in front of the wide expanse of the backwaters. It is a great place to escape from the fast life in Kochi city and enjoy the sights of the sunrise as well as sunset.

Cycling around the place offers a refreshing experience, say regular travellers. Otherwise, drive to Chathamma, park your car at a convenient place and take a stroll along the ridges of the paddy fields. With permission, you can also visit the prawn farms. Another sight that awaits travellers is that of villagers eking out a living by fishing in canoes. In addition, the scenery of Kaithapuzha backwaters offers a soothing view.
