Kerala's coastline makes it hot and humid during the summer. For people who are not used to tropical weather, the best time to visit Kerala would be during the months between October and April when the weather is pleasant. Those who are travelling for Ayurveda treatments should visit during the monsoons (JuneSeptember & OctoberNovember). Hill stations in Kerala can be visited year round.
When to Visit
The airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Kochi make interstate flights easy. For travel in town and suburbs, buses, both private and government operated (KSRTC), are a good option. Reading the destination boards can be a problem as most of them are in Malayalam, but the Information Kiosks at bus terminals are helpful. Buses can be a bit crowded during peak hours which are usually 8 am to 9.30 am in the mornings and between 3 pm to 6 pm in the evenings.
All cities and big towns are connected by the Indian Railways and travel by rail is quite cheap. Most backwater destinations are connected by government operated boats. Autos are good for travel within town limits but be warned that drivers can con those from outside Kerala. Prepaid auto rickshaw facilities are available from all major railway stations like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kottayam. Private taxis arranged by tour operators or hotels would be ideal for rural destinations or any day long travel for shopping and sightseeing.
