Alappuzha: The traditional boat races in Kerala are set to commence as the harvest festival of Onam approaches. The last water festival of the year as per the Malayalam calendar, the Champakulam boat race, was held late in June, though it is regarded as the first boat race of the season by water sports fans.
Here's the year's water festival calendar for central Kerala, though some events scheduled in the Kerala Boat Race League might change.
July 17: Evoor boat race at the Pathiyoor Karippuzha Punchapadam as part of the rituals at the Evoor Sree Krishna temple. The boat race on Karkidakam does not involve contests.
August 11: Nehru Trophy at Punnamada backwaters, Alappuzha. The iconic boat race raises draws global attention and had been staged since 1952. Initially called Prime Minister's trophy, it was renamed in honour of Jawahalal Nehru after his death.
August 22: Mannar Mahatma Gandhi Water Festival on Pampa river in Mannar.
August 24: Neerettupuram boat race on the Pampa river.
August 25, 26, 27: Payipad water fest. The three-day event on Payipad river takes place as the legend and history of Haripad Subramania Swamy temple is celebrated from Thiru Onam day.
August 27: Chengannur Chathayam Boat Race. Palliyodam or adorned royal boats contest in the race at Irappuzha on Pampa river.
August 28: Karuvatta boat race. Takes place a day after the Payipad water fest at the Karuvatta leading channel.
August 31: Goshala Krishna water fest at Thiruvanvandoor is part of the festivity at the Thiruvanvandoor Goshala Krishna temple at Chengannur. Palliyodams participate, but there is no contest.
September 9: Prayikkara Mother Teresa Memorial boat fest: It is also held on Pamba river at the Prayikkara long stretch. Date may vary.
September 9: Thazhathangadi water fest on Meenachil river in Kottayam. (League could alter date)
