Nehru Trophy Boat Race to be held on November 10
Around 78 boats, including 25 snake boats, will be taking part in the 66th edition of the Nehru trophy boat race.

Alappuzha: The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, which was put off in August due to the flood, has been scheduled for November 10 at the Punnamada lake. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar will be the chief guest.

State finance minister TM Thomas Isaac, who presided over the meeting on Tuesday said that new boats would not be registered and that the race schedule prepared in August would remain the same.

He also said there would not be any government funding for the boat race. “The Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society has decided to conduct it as a no-frills event. Sponsors will be sought at the local level.”

Isaac requested people to declare solidarity with flood-ravaged Kuttanad by purchasing maximum possible tickets. “The main idea is to send out the message that post-flood Kerala is safe for tourists,” he said.

“Ticket money was refunded for those who had purchased earlier, including online buyers. Those who have tickets with them can still use it.

“The race is being conducted considering the interests of clubs which lost money due to the postponement. Nearly Rs 1 crore has been spent so far. Loss can be avoided if the ticket collection hits Rs 50 lakhs.”
