Thodupuzha: Munnar is now witnessing a steady stream of travellers who are keen to enjoy the sights of monsoon. The 'Kashmir of South' displays picturesque rain scenes particularly in the afternoons.

Visitors from Gulf countries and north India have already started arriving in the area. With schools yet to reopen after the summer vacation in the north, travellers from there are having a great time in Munnar. Guests can be seen playing badminton in the rain at their resorts.

The monsoon tourist season that has started now will last up to Onam. Apart from Munnar, travellers flock nearby Thekkady, Ramakkalmedu, Panchalimedu, and Vagamon during this period.

Most hotels in Munnar also offer discounts on room tariff during the rainy season. According to statistics, Munnar, with around 3 lakh tourists, received the most number of visitors from May to August last year. Meanwhile, the figures for the other tourist spots in the area were, Vagamon with 1.50 lakh, Ramakkalmedu with 50,000 and Panchalimedu 40,000.

According to Idukki Tourism Promotion Council, several programmes have been lined up to celebrate monsoon tourism in the district. They include a rain walk and music band at Vagamon later this month. In July, the Tourism Department is planning more events at Ramakkalmedu.

Even though Munnar is receiving many visitors during rains, the biggest rush to the area is seen during the November-February months, when severe cold grips the region. The most popular spots in Munnar are Rajamala and Mattuppetty. Other spots like Marayur, Kanthalloor, Vattavada, and Chinnakkanal also draw travellers with their scenic beauty.
